Cru Bourgeois: From Horse of the Week to National Champion

HORSE OF THE WEEK

CRU

A Champion's Journey Continues

When we featured Cru Bourgeois as our Horse of the Week back in August, we knew he was something special. His owner Alex told us then that she was "convinced EquiNectar has played an important part in his successful transition from a racehorse to a happy, comfortable, content and very effective competition horse with a big future in Endurance."

Those words proved prophetic. Just months later, Alexandra Embiricos and Cru Bourgeois were crowned National Foundation Champions at The Golden Paste Company National Championships 2025.

An Incredible Season

Cru's 2025 season has been nothing short of remarkable:

  • 1st place at his very first endurance event
  • 1st place at his second event with a Grade 1 pass and performance formula of 49.5 (the highest ever for his grade)
  • Continued success throughout the season: 1st, 1st, 3rd, 1st, 2nd
  • National Foundation Champion at Red Dragon with another 1st place finish

All achieved with Grade 1 passes.

Championship Performance at Red Dragon

At the National Championships, Cru completed the 26km Championship ride at an average speed of 10.4kph, finishing with an incredible final pulse of just 36bpm – lower than his pre-ride pulse of 38bpm. This extraordinary recovery rate showcases not just his athletic ability, but his overall health and fitness.

"His 36bpm recovery was incredible," Alex shared after the win. "That just shows what a legend he is. He's got such a big heart – in every sense."

The EquiNectar Advantage

Throughout Cru's transformation from ex-racehorse to National Champion, EquiNectar has been a constant in his feed programme. Alex has consistently credited the supplement with supporting his preparation, performance, and recovery.

"He has thrived since being on EquiNectar and in my opinion his preparation, performance and ability to recover quickly have all been greatly advantaged because of it," Alex told us earlier this year.

The proof is in the performance: Cru's ability to maintain consistent Grade 1 passes, his remarkable recovery rates, and his sustained energy throughout demanding competitions all point to a horse in optimal digestive health.

Overcoming Challenges

Cru's journey hasn't been without obstacles. The towering 17.3hh gelding came to Alex after suffering from abscesses, a keratoma, and stress-induced laminitis in all four feet. "We nearly lost him," Alex recalls. It took two years of careful management to get him to championship fitness.

His National Championship victory came just weeks after Alex lost her mother, making the achievement even more poignant. "I cried all the way there and all the way back, but once I arrived, the friendliness and the scenery lifted me. Cru deserved to go to Wales, and we did it."

The Complete Package

Beyond his athletic achievements, Cru has become a crowd favourite. At every event, he wins "best turned out," with spectators marvelling at the beautiful ex-racehorse and queuing to take photographs.

"Cru is a complete dude – handsome, kind, and gentle," says Alex fondly. "He knows he's a champion now – and it's lovely to see."

Looking to the Future

Alex and Cru aren't resting on their laurels. They're already planning for 2026, with ambitions to move up to Novice level. "I think Cru's more than capable," says Alex. "We'll spend the winter building strength and fitness."

Her long-term goal? "To be considered for a Novice team, and one day, I'd love to ride in a race with vet gates. Being an ex-jockey, I love the thrill of competition."

A Testament to Gut Health

Cru's story beautifully illustrates what's possible when a horse's digestive system is functioning optimally. His consistent performance, rapid recovery rates, excellent condition, and calm, willing temperament in competition are all hallmarks of a horse with a healthy, balanced gut.

From a thin, shy ex-racehorse recovering from serious health issues to National Champion – Cru Bourgeois exemplifies the transformation that's possible with proper care, dedication, and optimal nutrition.

We're incredibly proud to have played a part in Cru's journey, and we can't wait to see what 2026 brings for this remarkable partnership.

Congratulations once again to Alex and Cru – you're both absolute legends!
