Celebrity Horse of the Week – Pineau de Re

CELEBRITY HORSE OF THE WEEK

Pineau de Re

Professional Career

Pineau de Re, foaled on May 8, 2003, is a French-bred racehorse who achieved racing immortality by winning the 2014 Grand National at Aintree. Beginning his career in National Hunt Flat races, he showed early promise with a victory at Fairyhouse in February 2008.

After establishing himself in both hurdles and steeplechases, his breakthrough moment came when winning the Ulster Grand National at Downpatrick in April 2013, demonstrating his stamina with an impressive 23-length victory. This performance caught the attention of owner John Provan, who purchased him and transferred him to trainer Dr. Richard Newland in Worcestershire.

The pinnacle of his career came in the 2014 Grand National, where under jockey Leighton Aspell, he triumphed at odds of 25/1. Taking the lead at the final fence, he powered clear to win by five lengths from Balthazar King, writing his name into the history books of the world's most famous steeplechase.

After his Grand National victory, he continued racing until 2016, notably achieving something rare among Grand National winners by winning again after his Aintree triumph - a feat not accomplished since Bindaree in 2003. His final race was at Uttoxeter in April 2016, after which he retired at the age of 13.

Life With His Current Owner

"I used to ride out for Dr Newland (trainer) once he retired from racing in 2016/17 I took him on and retrained him. We have been eventing, showjumping, hunting, team chasing, and showing. Now he's having a quieter life, still competing but at a lower level and he allows my 3 year old little boy to ride him!

He's always been a fussy eater but since discovering EquiNectar he loves his food and holds a lot more condition especially during season changes!"

At 22 years old, Pineau de Re continues to thrive in his retirement life. Lizzie reflects on his special character: "He's pretty special, if you want to use him on social media you're more than welcome!" Her pride in his achievements and current wellbeing is evident as she shares his story and photos, adding "I have so many pics of him!"

Most notably, Pineau de Re has formed a special bond with the rest of Lizzie's family, particularly her young son. The former Grand National winner's gentle nature shows how successfully he's transitioned from racing champion to beloved family horse. He even spends time with other racing legends - as Lizzie shares photos of "Pineau and Neptune Collonges (2012 winner)" together, demonstrating the special community of retired racehorses enjoying their second careers.
