Horse of the week – STORM

HORSE OF THE WEEK

STORM

"My horse's name is Storm, he is an 18 year old ID x Belgian warmblood. For the last 5 years, he suffered from impaction, usually around February. But in 2024 and 2025, he suffered most of the year and was in intensive care five times in 2024 and 5 times in 2025. He suffered bruised soles, was biting when being girthed and went from being a really forward going horse, to struggling to walk to his field and back.

He was diagnosed with grade 4 ulcers and I treated those with success, but the impactions were still occurring. The vets were scratching their heads and melanoma in the intestinal tract was suspected. His faeces were bone dry, despite his hydration levels being normal and I started to do some online research. I discovered that hind gut acidosis could cause dry faeces and EquiNectar was mentioned as a possible cure.

I took the plunge and bought my first 5l and within days, I saw a difference. He was better when being girthed, he was more forward. In fact, he started behaving like he did when I first got him, aged 3. I called Tim as I was concerned about the change in temperament and thought it was energy, due to high sugar. Tim explained that some horses become euphoric in the first ten days. This is due to them feeling so much better, after a long period of lethargy, being uncomfortable and all the other negative symptoms. After ten days, he calmed down, but he is still extremely forward, his feet and coat are amazing and the impactions have gone.

For the first time in years, his faeces looks normal. Everyone comments on how good he looks for his age and instead of being at the back on a hack, he is being held back as wants to gallop at every opportunity. We are three months in now, all three of my horses are on EquiNectar and it will be part of my horse's diet for life!

The two pics with no rider are when he was quite ill. It's very obvious I think."
