EquiNectar Success Story: A Horse Owner’s Journey to Colic-Free Living

One of customers, Rachel Shields, sent us this beautiful and touching story:

"Unfortunately we had the worst experience of gas colic. Our mare MiMi had gas colic several times leading up to March 2021 when she had a particularly bad episode which led to her being admitted to our local equine hospital. This wasn't the first time she had been there, on the previous occasion she was monitored and then came home, but this time was different, from the tests and scans we were advised that if we didn't operate she would need to be put to sleep. When they operated they found a 720° (double) twist in her gut, amazingly her gut was all still functioning, and nothing was removed.

MiMi wasn't expected to make it (I later read in an information leaflet from Rossdales that the greater the amount of twisting, the lower the survival rate: <180° = good prognosis, 180°–270° = fair prognosis, >270° = poor prognosis), but against the odds she started eating and soon after was well enough to come home. For a while her recovery progressed well, but then the colic returned. We tried so many supplements, I even created a spreadsheet with all the gut supplements on the market at the time to try and avoid repeating the same ingredients but nothing seemed to help, things didn't improve, they actually got worse. We thought it may be the grass so tried keeping her inside, although it worked for a while, again the colic returned. By this time we were starting to give up hope of a solution and thinking that the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep. All through this time I kept pestering our vets for help, and pretty much every vet in our practice had been to see MiMi, to the point that when I called anyone who answered the phone knew who we were. Finally, our vet practice put us in touch with a vet specialising in horse nutrition, and one of the supplements she recommended was EquiNectar. We slowly introduced MiMi to it, and as the vet had advised that the EquiNectar would also help her tolerate changes in grass we also started to turn her out again.

That was in January 2022, since then MiMi hasn't had any further episodes of colic. Gradually her demeanour changed, she has become so much happier on the ground and more rideable, even better than before she had colic. Best of all she is enjoying show jumping again, she has improved tremendously, becoming much more careful round the course and she is now ready to step up to Discovery level. It's taken a long time to get where we are now, and I'm certain that EquiNectar has played an essential role in allowing MiMi to have normal colic free life, we very much hope this continues."
